Some Russian department alumni go on to use their Russian-specific knowledge and skills in their education and careers after Bowdoin, while others branch out into new, unrelated professional directions but still cherish the experiences and connections that their Russian studies have brought into their lives. Our alumni report that the experiences and habits of mind and work they developed in the course of their undergraduate Russian studies—such as excellent memory and communication skills, analytical and creative thought patterns, and the ability to connect with people across linguistic and cultural boundaries—remain with them well beyond their college years. We are proud of the diverse accomplishments of our alumni and are glad to be able to share some of their stories here. Major s : Government and Legal Studies , Russian.

It is one of the five official languages of the United Nations, and ranks with English, Chinese, Hindi, Urdu, and Spanish as a major world language. What is more, Russian remains the unofficial lingua franca of many of the former Soviet republics, an indispensable communications tool across all of the Caucasus and Central Asia. Russian is a major language for scientific publication, and it is an increasingly important language for business and trade as Russian institutions, both public and private, pursue integration with their European and American counterparts. Students go on to work in business as financial and policy analysts for American and Russian companies. They work for non-governmental organizations, for publishing houses, for the print and broadcast media. They teach in Russian schools, and consult in fields such as marketing, advertising, aerospace, and computer engineering. And, of course, some continue to go on to graduate school to do more traditional work as teachers in universities and colleges, and as employees of the diplomatic and intelligence sectors of the United States government.

Each scholarship publishes its own criteria for applications, including being of Russian heritage or having emigrated from Russia. In addition, some opportunities are specifically designed to support students of both Russian descent and Jewish heritage. Scholarship recipients may use funding sources to pay for traditional college studies or non-degree endeavors.
